Abstract:
The Philippines has struggled to attain sustainable economic growth and transformation during the last five decades. Scholars have pointed to a number of weaknesses and constraints that have made it difficult for the economy to move forward. Where is our economy going in the medium-to-long term? Why have neighbors that were poorer not long ago, overtaken us in GDP per capita (e.g., China, Vietnam)? Where are we failing?
Despite this, President Marcos and his administration are firm on attaining the economic targets set in the Philippin Development Plan 2023-2028. The President remains confident that the country will achieve sustainable economic growth during his administration.
DLSU wants to contribute to the development of the country. The question is how. Successfully contributing to the nation's development requires an understanding of what development is about, of the labor market, and of the role tertiary institutions play as educators. The presentation will discuss whether the economic targets set by the administration are attainable or not, and what the Philippines needs to do to once-and-for-all move forward and develop. It will also address the implications for De La Salle University for planning, teaching, and learning.
